1st and 15: Verse 5

Happy April fools day! I don't know if anyone is still doing this with me but i said I'd do it for 3 months. Honestly, it has been much harder than I thought. It has made me realize how much I'm doing and NONE of it too well. I need to get organized which is not so easy for me. Anyway, I looked back at the first post to review the suggestions for memorizing and to see what I've not been doing. Then I found this pdf i downloaded:

Tips for Memorizing Scripture:

1)Take advantage of already established routines: Look at your schedule and determine when it is convenient for you to take time to memorize Scripture. You may do it when you are working out, riding in the elevator, brushing your teeth, at the dinner table (with your family), having devotions or any other time of the day.

2)Keep the verses handy: Keep your verses with you (in your purse, briefcase, pocket, car, etc.) so that you can take advantage of unexpected moments such as waiting for appointments, waiting in a
check out line, etc. Have verses displayed in various areas that you frequent such as your bedroom, the
bathroom, the kitchen, on the computer and your office.

3)Put the passage/verses in context: Read the verses surrounding the passage because the context will help you to more fully understand the text. Meditate on the passage, asking the Holy Spirit to help you understand it and apply it to your life. It may even be helpful to do a Bible study on that passage.

4) Repetition is essential: You have a better chance of retaining what you have learned if you repeat it several times a day, every day of the week. You might also want to do a weekly and monthly review.
Use a variety of ways to saturate your mind with Scripture. You may want to write out the passage a couple times, read it, and try repeating portions of it to yourself. If you are an auditory learner, you may want to obtain a recording of it to bring with you in your car or while doing chores. Visual learners may find it helpful to put the passage in a visible place such as the refrigerator or the bathroom mirror. Taking time to write it out can also aid inmemorization. If you are an experiential learner, you may want to make actions to go with the words. If you are musical, you may even want to sing the verse to a simple tune (Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, Deep and Wide, or other simple tunes may be helpful).
Don’t be afraid to try these ideas– even if they seem childish; they will help you learn
God’s Word. If you have children, you can use these ideas with them. They will love it!

5) Application is an important step in this process: You may want to write a short meditation on the passage early in the week to help you think through its implication in your life. You may want to keep a journal of the times that the verse makes a difference in your life– in your thinking, in temptation, in actions, etc. You may want to discuss application with others because different people will have
varying ideas and perspectives.

6) Develop an accountability structure: Find an individual or a group of individuals to keep you accountable. Give someone permission to ask you how you are doing with applying each verse to
your life. If you have kids, they will love to be able to check-up on you.

And the God of peace will be with you.

2 Corinthians 10:3-6- For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. 5 We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ, 6 being ready to punish every disobedience, when your obedience is complete.

John 15:7-8: 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. 8 This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.

Confusion

Everyone from the president to congress to the church seem to be confused. There is no absolute truth for many. One day they say one thing, the next day another. No one lies, they mis-speak. They don't cheat on their taxes, they make unfortunate mistakes. No shame is evident. It is maddening.

Anyone else troubled by the confusion in our nation? With a crumbling economy and an administration with an obvious agenda to further it's demise, what do we as Christians need to do? My first instinct is to fight but I find this brings out my argumentative side that can be well, not pretty...at all!! Like a pit bull, I can rip you to pieces if you don't agree with me. So, then, I go to the other extreme and decide no TV, no radio, just me and Jesus. Let's sing cum by ya...becoming isolated isn't the answer either. How do we find balance in the chaotic confused world?


I don't pretend to have the answers here. These are just the things I'm grappling with. I want to be a good citizen of my awesome country and I want to be a good citizen of God's kingdom. Can we have both? Or do we need to quit our jobs, sell the house and move to the country to grow our own veggies? I'm serious. I believe they are calling this "going John Galt". Are you as tired as we are? What's the point of all of it?

Through much reading and prayer, I'm again reminded to continue to sift it all through the fingers of God, not my emotions. A WWJD move of sorts-trying to balance helping others here to come to a knowledge of HIM while keeping my focus on knowing Him through his word and remembering his faithfulness in the midst of adversity. Without adversity, the lost person cannot realize their need for HIM. Perhaps there is a coming revival in the hearts of Americans. Maybe "Christians" will even OBEY and bear fruit, now that would be a change! We are promised that if we are his he "works all things together for good." I guess now we get to see if we really believe it.


God is not surprised by all this confusion...that is one thing I am sure of today. What if we as Christians will begin to depend more on Him each day, in good times and in confusion. May HE be glorified through the confusion! After all, that is our ultimate goal. May we "be still and know that He is God" (Psalm 46:10) remembering our brevity here and direct our gaze at the awesome creation all around us that reminds us of his exquisite design. Thank you God that we know the end of the story and that nothing is too hard for you! (Jeremiah 32:27)

Proverbs 2:1-8:
1 My son, if you accept my words

and store up my commands within you,

2 turning your ear to wisdom

and applying your heart to understanding,

3 and if you call out for insight

and cry aloud for understanding,

4 and if you look for it as for silver

and search for it as for hidden treasure,

5 then you will understand the fear of the Lord

and find the knowledge of God.

1st and 15: Verse Four


Well, I'm a day late due to unforeseen organisms invading my body and making my head feel like it might explode! I must say this is the first real bout I've had with this stuff since before my accident so I am certainly thankful for that. It scares Chuck to death because I can't move secretions well (I know too much info) because of diminished lung capacity. I woke up unable to catch my breath and wheezing last night. Flashback to hospital days for us when I couldn't breathe.......just a bit unsettling.

Anyway, I'm much, well, a little better today.
Here are the verses chosen for this week. Pick one of these or find one for yourself. I'm picking the 1 Peter 3 verse. If we truly care about others, we should always be ready to tell them about real freedom through Christ. Please note the hope in the verse is better read "assurance".

1 Peter 3:15-16
- Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16 keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.

Romans 8:26-
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will.

Colossians 3:12-14-
Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

Romans 12:1-2-Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship. 2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Joni Eareckson Tada on Disabilities and Suffering



When I was a little girl I read a book called Joni about a quadriplegic woman who painted amazing artwork using a paint brush in her mouth and lived her life "walking" with Christ. I never thought she and I would have the same level spinal cord injury or similar struggles. Fast forward many years, Joni Eareckson Tada has lived an extraordinary life since her diving accident in 1967. She has now been in a power chair for over 40 years. Every morning her aides come in to get her up, dress her, put her makeup on and get her to work. Her accomplishments are mind boggling as she has worked to help the disability community through Joni and Friends and she takes wheelchairs to needy people all over the world through Wheels for the world. Add to that the many books she has written and her radio program. Read her biography here.

As I was looking at John Piper's Desiring God blog, I saw a entry linking to a blog asking for Prayers for Joni. Clicking on it i find she recently was at Dallas Theological Seminary and you could watch the video. It is below and on the link site. I highly recommend it. She is an amazing woman. Thank you Joni! You are a very bright light in our lives! Please pray for her.

1st and 15: Verse Three


Where do these weeks go? I thought when my kids were older I'd be more organized and have more time to get those long awaited "to-do's" done. Well, I've found I just pack my days with more stuff that I like to do. The laundry that once was for five is now for two but still remains a hassle. The decision as to what to make for dinner even seems harder now because it's hard not to make a large amount with lots of leftovers. Different seasons in life bring different challenges.

Thanks to this economy, the challenges for me now seem to be to remember that though we (actually just Chuck) work to make our living, God ultimately provides for our needs. Lately, like most of America, I've been watching the 401k turn into a 200.5k. It's easy when things are going well to be self confident and not look to God for help. We forget that we are defined by the Maker of all creation, not by the size of our portfolios. I really believe this downturn may bring revival to many and a much needed seeking for the truth. Christians know the only real road to joy and peace is through Jesus. Hopefully, many more in our nation and our neighborhoods will see that as well as they watch us endure the trials with grace. How is this downturn changing your witness for Christ? Wouldn't this be an awesome opportunity to help others in and around your community or even in your own family?

I've picked the following verses to remind me of just how faithful our God is! Please feel free to pick your own. I'd love to know how it's going for you. I've yet to get a real system, but I'm working on it. God makes us all with unique qualities so don't be bummed if you are having trouble. Just begin again! Thanks for doing life with me!



Psalm 55:22-Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall.
