The Gift of Being a Woman

We women are extraordinary creatures. We can be completely short and unmerciful with those we love then, 3 minutes later, break into tears at commercials.....what's that about? Do you identify with this? Seriously, I can be prayed up, had my quiet time, content and loving life, then........my family comes home. Being a wife and mom is hard!! Why didn't someone tell me about this! Hey mom, where was the warning? Are you laughing at me from heaven! Stop that!

That being said, I have had my share of train wrecks as a parent. I sat at ballgames acting like my kid was the next Chipper Jones, constantly evaluating what the coach was doing as if I was Bobby Cox himself. I've enabled bad behavior with teachers because I did not want to see that my kid was out of control. I've been prideful and determined to "win" the power struggle with my kids that, actually, no one ever wins. I've failed to be encouraging when needed but excelled at pointing out and dwelling on the negative. I've been lousy at communicating and at being transparent because I was too prideful to let them know that I made mistakes too.

Looking back, many of our train wrecks could have been avoided altogether or, at the very least, been less painful, had I stopped to ask God for help, for wisdom, for blessing. If I had only realized that seeking God before the disaster instead of after just might have derailed that freight train that was coming straight at my family!! Then again, sometimes I drove the freight train!! My missing ingredient was the priority I placed on things in my life. I had it all out of order. I was in control! Well, that worked out well.

So why am I telling you this? It is not because I enjoy the humility of it all. I write all this because I'm being obedient to God, finally! Being a mom and wife is hard and I've only realized that we are commanded to come alongside each other and as "iron sharpens iron" teach the younger women to love their husbands and children, to place their priorities on their families and God first, to embrace the special role God has given women.

Women, we are remarkable human beings with God-given special nurturing abilities and just amazing power to change the lives of those around us, for good...or bad. Our children hang on our words and love us like no other person they will ever know. When we love our husbands unconditionally instead of nagging, they are transformed by our love.

God has uniquely gifted you and called you to the most important job in the world- being a wife and mother. It is my prayer that you realize how blessed you are to be a woman and that you seek Him daily in impacting your family for His kingdom. I pray you learn from my mistakes! Your mission field is right there at your house! Embrace this calling!

Titus 2:3-5: Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, 4 and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, 5 to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled.

Proverbs 27:15-17: A quarrelsome wife is like a constant dripping on a rainy day; 16 restraining her is like restraining the wind or grasping oil with the hand.17 As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.

A Giant of a Man - Meet Nick Vujicic

I saw this inspirational man on Joni and friends and loved his spirit and his message!! Enjoy!!

His name is Nick Vujicic and he's 25 years old. He was born without arms or legs and given no medical reason for this condition. Faced with countless challenges and obstacles, God has given him the strength to surmount what others might call impossible. Along with that, the Lord has placed within him an unquenchable passion to share this same hope and genuine love that he's personally experienced with more than two million people all over the globe. Traveling extensively to over 19 nations, he's been extremely humbled by the continuous opportunities that the Lord has given him to share his testimony along with the hope that he has in Jesus with people in so many nations and situations. His greatest joy in this life is to introduce Jesus to those he meets and tell them of His great desire to get to know them personally by allowing Him to become their Lord and Savior.

1st and 15: Verse Two

So how'd you do? However you did, it's a start! All this stuff is a developed discipline or habit and baby steps are steps, right? Thank you God for your patience! I've been trying to think of verses for these next two weeks. It is so hard to narrow it down! In the last two weeks I've seen God working in the hearts of my children and that has been especially sweet. I'm reading "Moment for Families with Prodigals" by Robert Morgan. It has been awesome at reminding me of the reality that God is listening and that it is HIS battle, not mine. So the choices are:

2 Chronicles 20:15b: This is what the Lord says to you: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s." (Read the whole chapter- amazing reminder that we are God's and he is battle ready for his children)

James 1:2-5
- Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. 4 Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.

Phil 4:4-6-
Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Ezekiel 11:19-21: I will give them an undivided heart and put a new spirit in them; I will remove from them their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh. 20 Then they will follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. They will be my people, and I will be their God. 21 But as for those whose hearts are devoted to their vile images and detestable idols, I will bring down on their own heads what they have done, declares the Sovereign Lord.”

If you like one but it's too long, just pick part of it. Context of the verse is key so sometimes I don't like to separate them.
I don't know about you, but I need peace, perseverance, an undivided heart, and wisdom!! I'm picking James. I love that God wants me to ask him for wisdom and especially that He loves to give it to me! Have a blessed couple of weeks and let me know how it's going. Praying for you all.

Making God Smile :)

This summer, I received an email from a friend discussing the upcoming year and what she wanted from me in our Women's prayer ministry. While reading, I see she has an obvious gift for communicating, encouraging and for organization. (I'm jealous about that organization one!) At the end she writes: "You make God smile!"

Huh? It was the strangest feeling...I felt uncomfortable with this statement. Myself being a "recovering legalist" thought that she was mistaken and probably shouldn't speak for God. He might zap her or something for being so presumptuous. I mean, he is God. He knows the real me and He is not smiling!

So, I continued to get emails from her and there it would be again, the smiling God thing. Didn't she know that God is really angry with me? The more I thought about it, the more confused I grew but I liked the idea of God smiling! I certainly could believe God smiled on others so why was I so reluctant and even resistant to his smiling upon me? I really liked the idea of being pleasing to God but have been so convinced that I was "bad" or maybe I was choosing to believe things about God that simply were not biblical. I knew it was time to dig into his word and see for myself. The character of God is a vast subject but I'm looking for his smile....

Here are a few verses that certainly imply a smiling God and father that delights in his children:

Zeph 3:17: The Lord your God is with you, he is mighty to save.

He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love,

he will rejoice over you with singing.

Psalm 67:1 May God be merciful and bless us. May his face smile with favor on us.

God the Father was happy with His Son Jesus as seen in Matt.17:5: While he was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!”

Genesis 3:26 tells us we were created in his image. Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness,".... He smiles, and so He made us able to smile.

So I'm now in the habit of seeing God for who he really is as defined through the word of God. How he is a creator of a vast universe and yet knows my name and delights in me...I cannot fathom it. But I know he is and has been faithful. I feel his warmth and am infused with joy when I take the time to become more like him through the study of his word. I am beyond thankful that His promises are many and His love for us is immeasurable.

God doesn't change us so He can love us, He loves us as we are so he can change us!

Thankfully, there is a God and he smiles!

Psalm 103: 8 The Lord is compassionate and gracious,
slow to anger, abounding in love.

9 He will not always accuse,
nor will he harbor his anger forever;

10 he does not treat us as our sins deserve
or repay us according to our iniquities.

11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
so great is his love for those who fear him;

12 as far as the east is from the west,
so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

13 As a father has compassion on his children,
so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him;

1st and 15 meditation kickoff

Meditating on Scripture Together

You might ask,
Why would anyone want to do that!?!?

Chuck Swindoll wrote, “I know of no other single practice in the Christian life more rewarding, practically speaking, than memorizing Scripture. . . . No other single exercise pays greater spiritual dividends! Your prayer life will be strengthened. Your witnessing will be sharper and much more effective. Your attitudes and outlook will begin to change. Your mind will become alert and observant. Your confidence and assurance will be enhanced. Your faith will be solidified” (Growing Strong in the Seasons of Life [Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 1994], p. 61).

Meditating or memorizing scripture supplies us with HIS power. When we are meditating on his words, we are abiding in Him. Jesus says in John 15:7, "If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you." The promises of God, his word, abiding in us lie ready to be turned into prayers and prayer is powerful! So, let's kick it off:

Choose one of the following verses to meditate on for 2 weeks, choosing one that meets you where you are and ministers to you:
Hebrews 4:12-For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

Zephaniah 3:17:

17
The LORD your God is with you,
he is mighty to save.
He will take great delight in you,
he will quiet you with his love,
he will rejoice over you with singing.
Psalms 107:19-21-

19 Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble,
and he saved them from their distress.
20 He sent forth his word and healed them;
he rescued them from the grave.
21 Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love
and his wonderful deeds for men.

1 John 2:15-17: Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For everything in the world—the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does—comes not from the Father but from the world. 17 The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.

John Piper
says that there are two keys to scripture memory: prayer and setting aside time, probably 10 minutes a day. So read it, say it, pray it and study it. Write it out on an index card or print it out. Tape it on a mirror or put it on your frig. Whatever works for you!
Also, if you pick your own verse or would like to memorize a psalm (Psalm 8 is a good one) a few verses at a time, that would be great.

In summary, just pick a verse that you think you can tackle. Read it and the verses around it to see it's context and who is talking to whom. Then, write it out and meditate on it for 2 weeks. There is no test and no one listening to you. It's just for you and God is so pleased at any attempt whatsoever. He is well aware of your capabilities or lack thereof so just have fun.

You make God smile...He delights in you...how mind-boggling is that thought!
Thanks for doing life with me.
